macro-mini
This show consists of two parts. The first part is a
series of new paintings in the Macrocosm series. Scientific images
gathered by satellites are rendered in layers of glossy acrylic. The new
pieces are all miniature versions of earlier paintings: mini hurricane
(2002) is 16” x 18”; Hurricane (2001) is 72” x 78”. Repeating the
same motif at very different scales reveals interesting things about the way
the flowing qualities of fluid paint depict the dynamic structures of
immense natural phenomena on the scale of planets and galaxies.
The second part of the show consists of
paintings and drawings from earlier series, which in retrospect could be
called Microcosm. Two series of large drawings are represented. In
both, pours and drips are used to create forms which are then embellished
with pencil to suggest organic forms of indeterminate scale. In the
White on White latex drawings, liquid latex is poured on paper, then
removed after it dries, leaving only a very faint impression. In the mylar
drawings, acrylic paint is poured and spattered onto mylar, but then washed
off before it has a chance to fully dry.
On a personal level, this show represents my first
visit back to Prague since living and studying there from 1993 to 1996.
I am pleased to have the opportunity to return and show my work.
